Advance Care Planning Legal Map
Advance Care Planning In the United States: A Longitudinal Perspective. This dataset offers easy access to laws related to Advance-care planning (ACP) in each of the states. It also offers a longitudinal view of these laws, allowing users to view changes in ACP laws form their inception in each state to the present. Users of the dataset can interact with it through a tabular format as well as a clickable map format and dataset allows users to read the source text of each relevant law and to move the timeline slider to explore historical as well as current legal data. Use of the dataset does not require advanced computer skills. This is a living dataset which will be updated at least annually to keep the information current. The version on this page contains law up to and including December 31, 2018.
The quality measure data on the legal map is derived directly from publicly available information collected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Users can find out more about their methods at the links above. Questions about the actual coding can be directed to the CHAT project.
Our team of student coders then harvested the data of most concern to our project and hand entered it on the map for visual display.
To use the legal map, simply move the slider to the desired year on the timeline, then click a state to access the data. Statutory provisions directly responsive to a question can be viewed by clicking the section symbol next to that question. In some cases, information was derived by omission; that is; when a statute is silent or ambiguous on a particular question, we have included explanatory notes explaining our coding decision.
