Pro Bono Legal Services
Students in the Veterans Legal Clinic help veterans obtain disability (and this, often, health care) benefits and apply for discharge upgrades.
-help veterans submit disability claims to the Department of Veterans Affairs,
-work on appeals of denied claims, and
-help veterans obtain increases in disability rating, for cases in which
increases are justified by a veteran’s service record and health status.
Students may also help veterans upgrade other-than-honorable discharges from the military so that these veterans become eligible for disability and health care benefits.
The Veterans Legal Assistance Project (VLAP) at Hofstra Law seeks to do its part to assist those who have served our country through providing basic legal counsel to those who seek it, irrespective of income level or discharge type.
VLAP produces bi-annual, pro-bono, student-run events aimed at providing basic legal guidance, within 45 minute blocks of time per issue, between the client and the attorney. Currently, VLAP acts as a liaison between the two.
Biannually, students from Hofstra Law’s Veterans Law Student Association (VLSA) coordinate with volunteer attorneys to provide free legal consultations to veterans. On our site you can learn how VLAP provides veterans with the necessary information to ease their legal burdens and access various veterans’ organizations and benefits.
